Introduction
Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL) is located in Alasa-Eleme, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in the southern Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It is a petrochemicals complex engineered to manufacture olefins and polyolefins derived from Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) and Propylene Rich Feed (PRF), specifically Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) resins which are basic plastics used in a variety of consumer and industrial end products. The Federal Government through NNPC established Eleme Petrochemicals Company Ltd (EPCL) in 1991 to execute Phase II of Nigeria’s 3-phase Petrochemical development programme with a plant plate capacity of 240,000MT of polyethylene (PE) and 80,000MT of Polypropylene (PP).
EPCL is a 100% subsidiary of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) commission in 1996. In 2006, 75% of EPCL’s equity was privatised to Indorama Plc. for $225million while 10% was reserved for NNPC.
In 2009, the NCP, at its 57th meeting held on February 26, 2009, graciously approved the sale of 7.5% and 2.5% of the remaining FGN’s 15% reserved equity in the company to the Host Communities and staff of the company respectively, leaving a balance of 5% for the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)
