The National Council on Privatisation (NCP), chaired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, held its second meeting for 2026 on Wednesday, 26th August 2026, receiving updates on ongoing privatisation and reform activities, particularly power sector reforms.
Key updates included progress under the $500 million World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), with 668,000 electricity meters installed out of 1.033 million meters delivered under International Competitive Bid 1 (ICB1), representing approximately 65% of the meters delivered.
The Council also reviewed the implementation of the Electricity Act, including the transition to State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, with 17 states having established their own regulatory commissions since April 2024.
The meeting reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing reforms that strengthen the power sector, improve service delivery, reduce estimated billing and deliver better outcomes for Nigerians.
